2014 Accomplishments
Duchity Organization for Vocational and VolunTour Experience (DOVVE)
This project is located in the mountain village of Duchity, 125 miles southwest of Port au Prince. The construction of the vocational school has progressed to the point where it was able to open for classes in the fall of 2014. While work continues on the structures, our locally based Haitian program directors are operating the school with the offering of classes for English, Computer, Agriculture, Construction, Plumbing, Tile and Welding. Over 200 students have enrolled- men and women aged teen to 60. Volunteers from the U.S. were able visit and use the sleeping, eating and gathering space.
Ecole Foyer D’Espoir (House of Hope School)
This elementary school was established in Port au Prince, with VHP’s help, in 2007 and grew over the years. With many students successfully passing the government exams, EFE has gained enhanced credibility. When not holding classes, the school serves as a much needed inner city community center. With the thriving of the school it has become more sustainable and VHP is gradually reducing its financial support.
Water purification
Five new Bio-sand water filters, built and purchased in Haiti, were installed in family homes each month this year. These families who where previously lacking accessible and affordable clean water now have the security of knowing they are less vulnerable to diseases such as cholera. With each filter being able to serve 10-20 people, this program has served up to 1,200 people this year. VHP continued the support of four trained technicians in Port-au-Prince and one in the distant mountain village of Duchity for setting up the filters, teaching clean water practices and follow up visits. For other families waiting for their own filter, VHP provided a covered bucket with spigot so they can fill up from a neighbor’s filter.
Fiscal Sponsorship:
Vermont Haiti Project provided fiscal sponsorship for Stone By Stone to support a medical clinic called Fanmi Lasante to operate weekly with a Haitian physician, nurse and support staff. It is estimated that 100 people a month were seen in the clinic over the past year. This rural region has no other access to medical care, prenatal care or health promotion services.
Fiscal Sponsorship:
The film “Morgan’s Kids” is being made to document the work in a Haitian safe house where children are cared for while working to reunite them with their parents, and they are helping parents to find children who have been trafficked. Vermont Haiti Project’s fiscal sponsorship has allowed for equipment, transportation, translator fees and other filmmaking expenses.
