Dear VHP Supporters and Friends: Here at Vermont Haiti Project it is not our practice to frequently ask for donations. We generally save our pleas for holidays, and special or serious occasions. This is a serious occasion! As you may know by now, Hurricane Matthew has slammed into Haiti, and this Caribbean nation is again struggling to recover from a natural disaster. Many of our partner communities have been hit hard. VHP board president Kimball Butler reports on the situation in Duchity, where VHP’s largest program, the vocational school, is based: “Despagne (VHP project manager) called at noon today to say he had a call from our colleagues in Duchity. They walked quite a way to find a signal to call. Their news was only of the village center- they had no news about the 20+ communities surrounding.
“The rain has continued. No one is sleeping as there is only room to stand. Our vocational school lost most of the tin roof and some of the wall is broken, but people are using parts of the school for shelter. The road is not passable by vehicle. And now news of a surge of Cholera! “They need help.!” If you feel so moved to help, please consider a donation to VHP! As always, all tax-deductible contributions go directly to support our efforts; we are an all-volunteer organization, and we have a long history of accomplishments! “Our success is completely due to the strength of our relationships. First and foremost we are friends and neighbors helping one another. Together we have created a community, and we invite many more to join us!” Our sincere thanks to everyone, especially those of you who have already responded to this emergency, along with all of our regular supporters!
