![]() Patrick with VHP's Donna Thomas It now costs $280 for a bio-sand water filter to be installed in Duchity, an eight hour drive up the mountain. The result: families have access to clean water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and washing clothes-- something we take for granted. The families with bio-sand filters have not had cholera! Patrick Louis is Vermont Haiti Project's lead technician on the ground in Haiti. He takes his role very seriously, not to mention recognizing and sharing the importance of clean water. Patrick tells the people:"You are going to take care of the filter like your baby, give it a lot of importance" Patrick says that "after the earthquake some people left their homes in Port au Prince. Others then came back, and moved in, and are happy to have the filters." ![]() There are not enough water filters for everyone, so there is a waiting list. Patrick relates the needs of the people by sharing these quotes: "I am very happy to have a filter - my neighbor would like one too"... "I do not have money to buy clean water" People have offered to pay Patrick for helping their family and neighborhood but he does not accept the money. "I much more appreciate when someone that is on the waiting list always says 'thank you, grace be with you cause I'm using my neighbor's filter'". As for the success of the Biosand filter program, Patrick offers the following testimonials, again from the clients: "My children had a lot of 'things - sores' in the head. Now with clean water the sores are gone and their teeth (gums) are good."... "I am not having to buy clean water, I have my own bio-sand filter so I can drink clean water, do dishes and cook." When you are giving thanks on Thursday please be grateful for all we have. If you would like to make a donation, or assist in purchasing a filter for a family in Haiti, contact us.
