Despagne's Dream

Duchity Vocational and Educational School

in Haiti

"We have got to figure out how to assist Haitians in decentralization. Government, economies, jobs, health have to be
outside of the city of Port-au-Prince in order to effectively talk about rebuilding Haiti or building Haiti to be a better Haiti."

Joia Jefferson Nuri - Chief of Staff TransAfrica Forum

Despagne Felix is a man with a dream

A dream to bring the village of his childhood into the 21st century and to give its people hope for a future.

Despagne was born and raised in Duchity, a town in the mountains without basic amenities - no running water, limited electricity, and dirt roads.

It is a place with limited access to education and vocational training.

In spite of these challenges, Despagne learned to read, studied mechanics, and eventually made his way to Port au Prince (PaP) to find work.

But for years he has wanted to build a school in Duchity to teach literacy and trades, such as mechanics, welding, carpentry, sewing, cooking - all useful skills for young people needing to find work in their home region.

"For too long, Haiti has revolved around its capital city rather than just being supported by it. Changing that structure is key. You have to be able to provide jobs to the young ones, be able to decentralize. The rest of Haiti has long been overlooked."

-former President Bill Clinton, the United Nations special envoy to Haiti.

Despagne decided to act. He bought land, built a wall around the perimeter, built a road, piped in water from the mountain source, and put in composting toilets. His vision includes three major areas

  • a community center for events related to the school (such as graduations) and the community at large
  • a section for small buildings - each housing an individual trade
  • a dormitory.

   HELP SUPPORT DESPAGNE'S DREAM

The Vermont Haiti Project (VHP) is committed to supporting this project.

We are asking you to help to make this dream a reality by making a tax-deductible donation.

    * $500 plus donors will each have his/her name engraved on a gratitude wall that will be part of the community center and receive regular e-mail updates on the progress of the school. This contribution can be in someone's memory or honor.

    * Benefactors: For any person who donates $5,000 or more and wishes to travel to Duchity, we offer a trip that will be the experience of a lifetime, immersed in the culture and environment of the beautiful mountain villages of Haiti

But any amount is accepted and appreciated!.

The photographs show how much has already been accomplished with few resources.

Every single moment that Despagne gets a break in his work routine, he makes the seven hour journey to Duchity.

He will do whatever it takes to make his dream come true.
