Fund Raising

January, 2012

Dear V.H.P. Family, Friends and Donors:

We are approaching two years after the earthquake disaster in Haiti.  The earthquake devastated the countrKimball1y, yet the spirit of the people remains strong.

Vermont Haiti Project continues to work in Haiti, with Haitians, to improve their conditions.  The needs are immense but- as we’ve found during our many trips to Haiti - when we focus on achieving the needs of families and communities- we can do a lot of good.

As a new year in Haiti begins, we look to the future, and kindly ask for your support.

With plenty of important causes to choose from,, why Haiti?

  • Many people in Haiti have nowhere else to turn. The reliability of government programs and churches has been inconsistent. We are their advocates….
  • Because you have $20 and they have no one else. Your $20- along with donations from others- is HUGE; it really counts...
  • There still is not a lot of help reaching Haiti, except from grass roots organizations such as ours, who are working with people one on one...

  • VHP is your friend and neighbor, connecting with Haitian friends and neighbors. Your donations are meeting the needs that our Haitian friends & partners are identifying...

We are lucky to have Despagne as our primary Haitian partner with VHP.  To give you an idea of his heart, Despagne was given a gift of new sandles when his were falling apart, but the next time we saw him the sandles were being worn by a neighbor because Despagne said, "I have sandles", (the falling apart ones).  Despagne and our other partners are people who look around at their community, see how it can be better and get involved.  This is the hope of Haiti.

Patrick, one of the VHP water filtration technicians, had a large tent provided by VHP and he started an activity program for the children in his area's IDP (internally displaced persons) camp.  He taught clean water, clean hands, not pooping near water, how to make ORS (oral rehydration solution) and how to take it for diarrhea. They sing. They have snack.  Patrick hopes to continue his program, along with providing families with clean drinking water.

in October 2010, nearly ten months following the earthquake, our supported school and community center in Port au Prince reopened.
At the first day of school at Ecole d'Espoir, all the kids were in uniform and we got teary seeing Maria,  because she is really following through on her promise to these kids, providing an education in a caring and safe environment.  For the current academic year, over 200 children are getting a chance to better themselves.

Timothe is the dentist at our medical clinic in Desab.  One week after the earthquake, he replaced his father, who died in the tragedy Timothe is upholding the family commitment to provide better health care to his rural community. We are thankful to be able to employ a medical staff in the Desab region.  On our recent trip we brought a donated microscope, which will be the beginning of a lab.  Timothe would love to have a dentist chair.

The awful memories of the earthquake have sadly faded for much of the world, yet the after effects, and many additional problems continue to linger.  It is our passionate hope, and fervent goal to help make life better for the wonderful people of Haiti.

If you have $20, 30, 50, 100 or more to spare before the end of the year, you will join us in giving Haitians hope for survival and a brighter future.
