VHP members have been active in Haiti for many years and formally created the 501(c) 3 non-profit in 2009.  Prior to and since its founding VHP developed several programs with its partners in Haiti.  Some of these programs involve clean water, health, and education. “The Vermont Haiti Project is grateful to the many folks who have donated their time, resources and expertise,” Butler said.  In 2009, VHP started a school for 100 children.  Unfortunately, the school building was severely damaged during the earthquake in January 2010.  “VHP and our Haitian partners have been working together to ensure that the children will continue their education,” Butler said.  The clean water project is a collaborative effort with Pure Water for the World of Rutland.  This program also began in 2009 and has been successful working in getting clean water filters installed in homes providing clean water to hundreds of people.  A longtime OB-delivery nurse, Butler noted that her involvement with Haiti began in 2006, when she made her first visit to the country with a group from the Fletcher Allen Health Care guided by Ron Sweeten.

VHP’s other co-founders; Donna Thomas, Tim Singer, Augusta Wilson and Butler have made numerous trips to Haiti over the past several years and will return there at the end of September with the VHP’s Haitian partners who are visiting Vermont.
