VHP Past and Present
The Vermont Haiti Project was formed in 2007. It is the formal extension of the former "Project Haiti", which for 18 years had been involved with humanitarian services in a rural Haitian mountain region north of Port-au-Prince. VHP has always functioned as a grassroots, volunteer organization whose activities are constantly evolving and expanding in line with the needs of our partner Haitian communities.

Our goals involve sustainability and capacity building through people-to-people partnerships, helping to create solutions from the inside out-- seeking to develop healthier communities and cultural exchange opportunities for all. We are in constant communication with our Haitian partners to insure the successful progress of our programs. We schedule volunteer group trips several times per year, ranging in length from one to two weeks. Our volunteer groups typically will have a wide age mix, including college students to working professionals and retired people. Groups vary from four to ten people. Our work does not consist solely of trips of US citizens to Haiti. We also sponsor programs whereby Haitian citizens travel to the United States for professional development and to educate US citizens about circumstances in Haiti. Vermont Haiti Project is funded by donations, and operates with mainly Vermont-based volunteers, although we are happy to include out-of-state participants. There is no paid staff. Vermont Haiti Project is a Vermont non-profit corporation, and in August of 2009, the IRS granted to Vermont Haiti Project status as a 501(c)(3) charitable and tax exempt organization. We welcome anyone from any walk of life who has an interest in participating in, or supporting our projects- either in Haiti or in Vermont.
